Question: What is the benefit of web check-in of air-travel(flight)??Why is it meant for?
I am traveling in Kingfisher airlines(domestic) in India...It provides facility for web check-in...What does it mean? I am allotted my seat during purchase of ticket...What happens by check-in through web ?What are the benefits of web check-in, even though we have to obtain the boarding pass from the airport only???

Answer: Actually I've heard secondhand that some airlines here in the US WILL permit you to print your boarding pass at home. This will let you go straight to your gate upon reaching the airport, avoiding any check-in lines.

Keep in mind that to get the full benefit of this, you have to travel without checked luggage. If you have to check in luggage, you have to talk to an airline agent, which you have to wait in line for - just as if you were checking in at the airport.

Question: Air Travel - Security - Domestic & International Flights?
I will be traveling this summer, both Domestic and International. I hear loads of people complaining about the security measures and what you can/can't take on a plane.
Truthfully, I haven't been on a plane in at least 3 or 4 years. What advice would you give me?
Is it safe to put my medicines into my checked bag so I don't have to worry about security taking it from my carry-on?
One of my trips includes a layover. What are the chances that my bags will be lost?

Answer: Hi! I though I'd help answer your question. I am a reservation sales agent for a major airline, and I get these questions all the time. The main restriction right now with carry on is regarding liquid or gels. If it's ANY type of liquid or gel (i.e. hairspray, hairgel, deodorant, perfume, etc) it has to be in containers of 3.4 oz each and all of those containers must fit comfortable in a clear, 1 quart size ziploc bag. If it's any amount over, it has to be in your checked piece. This EXCLUDES medications and baby formulas/breastmilk. I would NOT check your medication - bring that in your carry on and you may want to declare that to the security agent if it's a liquid med. If pills, no prob!

If you have a layover, make sure your leaving again on the same carrier. Most carriers have baggage agreements with each other, so your bags will be checked all the way through to your destination. Some don't, however and you have to recheck them in again for your connection. You may want to call your carrier to confirm. If it's all on the same carrier, the chance of getting your bags lost is very very slim. Usually the average (I believe) is 1 or 2 bags lost per 1,000 customers. So, chances are - you'll be fine!

Have a great trip and don't forget to leave yourself with enough checkin time. International flights - at LEAST 2 hours!

Question: How reliable is Air Deccan for the domestic travel in India ?
While visiting India in December, we are planning to take Air Deccan flights between Chennai-Delhi and the Jabalpur-Delhi sectors. How is the reputation of this airline. Are there any other better and economical air travel options for these sectors ?

Answer: My dear friend, since Air Deccan is now a part of Kingfisher Airlines therefore you can trust this as one of the best, coz Kingfisher maintains good record ever since they started, they may not be very economical coz Kingfisher is considered to be an expensive Airlines.

Question: Is there a way to find out which flights will be 767 or 777 planes when planning air travel?

Answer: You can check the equipment used on previous flights with the same number on sites like FlightAware (http://www.flightaware.com). These will tell you which aircraft are most commonly used on a given flight. However, the airline will sometimes substitute other equipment at the last minute, depending on load and other factors.

Question: What are the new rules for carrying lithium battery cells in air flights?
I wanted to carry two electronic toys for my grand son in India from USA, which operate with lithium battery cells. I understand that the authorities have imposed new rules from Jan'08 to carry lithium non-chargeable battery cells in air travel. Kindly clarify

Answer: Effective January 1, 2008, the Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) will no longer allow loose lithium batteries in checked baggage. [From the TSA site below]

Effective January 1, 2008, the following rules apply to the spare lithium batteries you carry with you in case the battery in a device runs low:

* Spare batteries are the batteries you carry separately from the devices they power. When batteries are installed in a device, they are not considered spare batteries.
* You may not pack a spare lithium battery in your checked baggage
* You may bring spare lithium batteries with you in carry-on baggage – see our spare battery tips and how-to sections to find out how to pack spare batteries safely!
* Even though we recommend carrying your devices with you in carry-on baggage as well, if you must bring one in checked baggage, you may check it with the batteries installed.

The following quantity limits apply to both your spare and installed batteries. The limits are expressed in grams of “equivalent lithium content.” 8 grams of equivalent lithium content is approximately 100 watt-hours. 25 grams is approximately 300 watt-hours:

* Under the new rules, you can bring batteries with up to 8-gram equivalent lithium content. All lithium ion batteries in cell phones are below 8 gram equivalent lithium content. Nearly all laptop computers also are below this quantity threshold.
* You can also bring up to two spare batteries with an aggregate equivalent lithium content of up to 25 grams, in addition to any batteries that fall below the 8-gram threshold. Examples of two types of lithium ion batteries with equivalent lithium content over 8 grams but below 25 are shown below.
* For a lithium metal battery, whether installed in a device or carried as a spare, the limit on lithium content is 2 grams of lithium metal per battery.
* Almost all consumer-type lithium metal batteries are below 2 grams of lithium metal. But if you are unsure, contact the manufacturer!

Question: How much time between flights should be alloted for international air travel in Africa?
In particular between Harare, Zimbabwe and Johannesburg

Answer: for this route you need to allow for two things:
1. the stated three hours that you need to check in before your connecting flight departs
AND
2. since it is Zimbabwe and there have been jet fuel shortages or delivery problems planes (no matter what airline) have not been able to take off because they can't refuel

I suggest that you stay posted as to unfolding developments with regard to fuel supplies by contacting the airline you are flying on and if it is not South African Airways to call them also since they have the most flights on this route. the other airline to look at contacting is Comair (British Airways' partner on this route)

the SAA website is www.flysaa.com, the Comair website is http://www.comair.co.za/

Question: Can I carry an Iron box during air travel ?
Hai. I am travelling to China(Shanghai) on a business visit from India. This is my first flight trip. Can I carry an Iron box during my travel? Also if you can suggest some do's and don'ts during flight travel, it would be useful for me. Thanks buddy for the help rendered

Answer: Depends on weight and dimensions.

If it's a small box, and you NEED it for medical reasons or something along those lines, then yes you can take it as carry-on. However, if you don't absolutely need it with you, it will have to be checked at the counter.

Also, check with your airline, but if there is no reason to carry that box with you, and it's not life-threatening, you will have to check it as checked luggage. Also, if the dimensions and weight are too great, the airline may charge you to carry it, or may not let you bring it along at all.

Question: I am 29 weeks pregnant, how safe is the air travel (flight duration 5hrs with 2-3hr transit)?

Answer: Traveling late in your pregnancy, especially going on a
plane, is not a good thing. Your baby could go into fetal
distress, and make you go into early labor. So as far as air
travel, my advice is to wait until after your baby is born.
I didn't go on a plane or do any other traveling, until my
son was about two months old.
