Question: Does anyone have tips for air travel with a 10 month-old baby?
I'll be flying alone with my 10 month old daughter (she'll be on my lap) next week, and want some ideas for how to keep her (well, ME) from going crazy. She can't walk yet, but she hates sitting still for very long.
I already know the basics of air travel with baby (making sure she's sucking on something so her ears can pop, etc.)... I want to know the lesser known tricks!

Answer: We just did with with our son at the same age. We went to Hawaii and it was a 5 hour flight. The key is to talk to your doctor and find out how much Benedryl you should give your daughter. It is suppose to help them to get drowsy. That helped him relax. Another key was to have him suck on a sippy cup during take off and landing. A couple of times he tugged on his ear, but once he had something to suck on he was good. Bring lots of toys that are easy to hang on to. We lost a few things under the seats. I brought one toy that tied to the seat belt and it worked great. Good luck!

Question: Air travel with baby? what is best to do for a one year old baby traveling on a long trip? seat ticket or lap?
what do you think is best to do? purchasing a seat ticket or lap ticket for a one year old traveling a long distance? pls help mom choose, what if I buy seat ticket and he just doesnt want to sit in his seat at all.!!!

Answer: I have travelled with our kids when they were under 2 and they have sat in my lap without a problem. Normally the flights were 6 hours or less. If it is going to be longer than that then I would definitely buy a seat for the child. It is best if you bring the car seat for the child to sit in during this time as it is easier for the both of you. You can get up and walk around a bit with the child and it does help. Also bring a few toys & even a portable DVD player and it shouldn't be the problem. If it is possible you may want to travel at night, I found this easier as well, then you can both sleep.

Question: I need to know what is a safe age for a baby to be able to travel by air. Is it safe for their ears? HELP!?
My lady is in Indonesia and unable to travel due to pregnancy restrictions. Once the our son is born we know there will be immunizations. We need to know how many and which ones will be needed before entering the US. Also we need to know what is a safe age for a baby to travel by air? Is it safe? Can it hurt his ears? HELP!!!!!!!!! WE NEED TO KNOW SOON!!!!

Answer: I'm not sure what immunizations the baby will need to get into the U.S. but I do know that it is safe to travel. I waited until my son was 2 weeks old. Went to the 2 week check up then went to the airport. The doctor said just to use a pacifier during take off that's when it's supposed to hurt the ears the most.

Question: When can a new born baby fit for air travel and what are the precautions needed?

Answer: there are no flight restrictions on newborns but doctors generally advise you wait at least two weeks before taking your child out into public. Compound that with the fact that an airplane cabin is a confined space and germs are easily spread (think: RSV).

Precautions would be: nursing during takeoff and landing to prevent ear pain.

Question: How many days or weeks old does a baby have to be before being allowed to air travel on a six-hour trip?
My baby was born in New York and I am in Bolivia (South America). I need to know when will he and his mother will be able to come home. Are there any special health concerns?

Answer: its 9 days i know some one who had a baby in spain she lives there and wanted to fly to the uk to see her family and she was told after 9 days

Question: Air travel with a baby, restrictions on baby milk/food in jars or packets?
Hi, I am travelling to Florida from the U.K. for 3 weeks in the summer. My youngest will be 8months old by then so wondered what the rules were re packing powdered milk/foods and jars/tins of baby food.
He is Lactose intolerant otherwise we would have purchased most of the items in America. Advice from recent travellers or airline workers would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Answer: I travel from Tunisia to the US and back every year with my kids (2.5 hour flight to Germany, then a 10 hour flight to the US plus waiting times in the airport, and travel times to and from the airports - total from door to door is 24 hours). I have been doing this since they were 2 months old. They are now 7 and 5.

The baby formula is fine to take with you, and you are not limited to the amount you can bring aboard with you, do not worry. However, you may be asked to taste the formula by the TSA officers (usually this will only happen when you are exiting the country. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/c...

Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your children. A few of their favorite toys, books, and any comfort things such as a blankie. It's a long flight, so hopefully they'll sleep for most of it.

(I don't know how old your older ones are, so here is general advice)

I don't suggest sweets because they could get a belly ache and/or throw up. It is far better to pack fruit snacks (the ones that come in individual packs), Gerber makes dry (kinda like chips, but they are really easy to chew for youngsters) fruit and veggie wheel snacks (you can find them in the baby section -they're for toddlers, but even my husband and I love them!), you can bring lunchables as long as you take out the drink, pack a few instant hot cereal, instant rice, and other just-add-water packets. The stewards/stewadess' will provide you with hot or cold water upon request. At the very least they could eat the fruit and dessert provided by the airline.

One piece of advice: make sure you have your youngest drink or suck on a pacifier, or something that makes her swallow during take off and landing to relieve the pressure in her ears so she doesn't feel pain and doesn't cry.

If I can be of any other help or assistance to you, feel free to contact me.

I hope that you have a happy vacation!

Question: How long should a mother wait to travel by air after the baby is born?
The trip is quite long, from California to New Zealand.

Answer: okay let me tell u what i was told, my best friend was comming for a visit to Egypt from the US and her baby boy was just 3 months old, the Dr. told her that the baby will not be harmed in the landing and the take offs of a plain no ear enjuries would occur but the thing is that the plain doesn't have any ventilation and his amunity system is not bulit well yet, so the only risk is that ur baby might catch a desease (a flu)or something like that from other passengers... nothing crucial though.

Question: Does air travel during pregnancy have risks on baby's position?
There is a old myth that pregnant woman going altitude (like going up a hill, elevated roads & places, airtravel etc., ) will not have their baby's head turned in the right direction to aid in pregnancy & will lead to complications.

I have atleast 2 people who says its true in their case. One was my sister who went up a hill for a small vacation & another is a colleague who airtraveled. Both had their baby's head not turn down during labour. This could be a fact or mere coincidence.

Are there any woman here, who air traveled during pregnancy & had no complications in baby's position. Please write. Thanks!!

Answer: I have never heard of this at all before!
I have flown 2 times since I have been pregnant and it didn't cause her not to go down into the head down position her head is down there and locked in tight lol..

Question: Air travel with a baby?
I have to fly to St. Louis with my 4 month old baby. I can only get a seat for me, she will have to travel on my lap, so we can have 2 checked items, 1 carry-on item, and 1 personal item (the diaper bag).

Any suggestions for how to get all of her STUFF to the other end without exceeding the baggage limit? I can bring either an umbrella stroller or a snap'n'go with a carseat (would that count as 2 checked items?). General suggestions for check-in and flying also appreciated!

Answer: My daughter took her first flight at 3 weeks old. Since then, she has been on a plane 4 more times and she is now 21 months. For three of those flights, I purchased an extra seat for her. But for two flights, she sat in my lap. Most airlines check a stroller at the gate and a carseat at baggage for free. They will not count towards the checked baggage limit. What I do is take the diaper bag and a backpack as my carry-ons and then two larger suitcases for all of our clothes to check at check-in.

One thing I must tell you is to make sure the baby drinks a bottle on take-off and landing. I can tell you that this will help prevent ear popping and vomiting (which my daughter did on take off and landing on her last flight since she refused to drink her juice). At check-in (if you fold the stroller down) you can usually request for the airline to meet you at security with an electric cart to drive you to your gate.

Some other words of advice. At security, the stroller will have to be folded down and put through the x-ray machine. Last time, they also made me take my daughter's shoes off. While waiting in the security line, start taking off the baby's coat and shoes so you'll be all ready. And the person checking tickets and IDs when you first get to security will help you through security if you ask them to. Don't be afraid to ask for assistance. And if you are traveling solo with baby and have someone dropping you off at the airport, you are allowed (in my experience...it could differ by airport) to have someone walk to the gate with you since you are traveling with a baby.

There are a ton of options available. Call the airline and ask for advice. The airport customer service phone number could be a big help too. Good luck on your trip. I hope it all goes smoothly.

Question: Air travel with 10 wk old baby. is it safe ?
my baby is 7wk now.n we are planning for air travel 3 wk later.it is a long distance travel n it will take atleast 22 hrs to reach destination.so i m nervous wheather it is safe for such a small baby to go for such long distance.is there someone who also went for such a trip ? plz share your experience .

Answer: It is indeed safe. I would suggest though that you purchase an airline seat for your baby & have him/her travel in a car seat. Most car seat models are approved for air travel and it is absolutely the safest thing to do. I do NOT recommend that you even attempt to travel with the baby on your lap or a sling. Take pacifiers, bottles, extra clothes and anything else you may need in a diaper bag (don't want to take a chance on baby luggage getting lost). Good luck!
